Taking Space Making Place—International Documentation of Contemporary Dance Education

idocde poster.jpeg

At the start of the pandemic I joined a remarkable working group of dance artists scattered around the globe.  We met each Saturday to share perspectives and processes. The group was organized by the International Documentation of Contemporary Dance Education (IDOCDE) residency and symposium with Alain Caillau, Angela Stoecklin, Defne Erdur, Dilek Üstünalan, Gabriela Zuarez, Imani Rameses, and Sezen Tonguz.

The IDOCDE organizes a conference at Impulstanz each year. This year it migrated online. The theme was TAKING SPACE MAKING PLACE 2020: How does space and place condition what is possible to think and enact within a space and a place? How (and what kind of) action can construct or reconstruct a space and a place?

Together, we offered a series of workshops during the conference, SANKOFA*: Revisiting (In)sights, (Up)dating Realities. After our isolation came a renegotiation of our perceptions and the question: what grounding ingredients combine to compose our reality?

The IDOCDE site—Mind The Dance—has wonderful resources for those interested in documenting dance teaching practices and sharing resources.
